چکیده

Introduction The need to conserve farm animal biodiversity is accepted by many countries through the ratification of the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD, 1992). Although farm animal breeds are not well defined in general terms, they are the typical unit for conservation. Based on an inventory of the actual breeds (on the global scale this is done by FAO through the world watch list, Scherf 2000), the specific breed characteristics and their genetic diversity, decisions need to be made on what should be conserved.

Molecular Markers for Fertility in Farm Animals

A genetic marker is a gene or DNA sequence with known localization on a chromosome. It can be de-scribed as a variation that can be measured or detected by a suitable method, and can be used subsequently to detect the presence of a specific genotype. Such variations occurring at chromosomal or DNA level can serve as genetic markers. The progress in development of molecular markers suggests thei...

New Challenges for Data Management in Genebanks

The use of genetic resources for crop improvement has undergone a fundamental shift. Continued progress will be dependent upon the natural variation contained within the world’s genebanks. Genebanks must manage their collections in ways that promote their utilization by increasing access to not only the living materials but also to the vast amounts of data that describe them. Documentation of e...

Neutral genetic markers and conservation genetics: simulated germplasm collections.

This study examines the use of neutral genetic markers to guide sampling from a large germplasm collection with the objective of establishing from it a smaller, but genetically representative sample. We simulated evolutionary change and germplasm sampling in a subdivided population of a diploid hermaphrodite annual plant to create an initially large collection. Several strategies of sampling fr...

Analysis of genetic diversity, phylogenetic relationships and population structure of Arasbaran cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) genotypes using ISSR molecular markers

Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.), considered as the ancestor of cultivated trees in Arasbaran region, is a medicinally and economically plant species. However, little is known about genetic diversity, breeding programs, and population structure of this species in mentioned region. Keeping this in view, the main objectives of present study were to analysis the genetic diversity, phyloge...

Elucidation of genetic identity and population structure of cacao germplasm within an international cacao genebank

Theobroma cacao L., or cacao, is the source of cocoa products used in the making of chocolate. These tropical trees are conserved in living genebanks. The International Cocoa Genebank, Trinidad is one of the largest ex situ collections in the public domain. Mislabelling is a critical problem and the correction of this problem is vital to improve the accuracy and efficiency of genebank managemen...
